Have you ever been so frustrated you think of starting over?
Maybe it’s failed attempt at baking a cake. Perhaps it’s a series of lousy purchasing decisions in decorating a room. Sometimes it’s a sales situation that you’ve worked on for months with no end in sight, and you get that thought, “I’m starting over.”
Things seem not to be going your way. The view from where you’re standing right now appears to be way less than your original plan.
Sometimes you’ve spent more money, more time, and put in way more effort than you had ever imagined. You are ready to dump the cake (I once buried a batch of dumplings in the backyard), sell the decor on the Facebook marketplace, and, yes, find a new customer. It just seems to be going nowhere fast. Every attempt seems to make it worse.
Here’s a bit of advice that has served me well. Take a deep breath. Get outside the situation before you make a decision you can’t return from.
Take some time to get away from the project. Go on a walk. Sit down and read a magazine article. Take a long drive. Once you’ve had sufficient rest, you can start to think about the following.
1. What is good about what I have?
2. Develop a vision for a new outcome based on the current situation.
3. Based on what I have and my new vision, what do I need to add?
4. What do I need to remove?
5. Go back to the deal or project with your new vision.
In sales situations, go back to the prospect with your new information. Say, “I’ve been thinking about you.” Because you have, and you saw a new point of view.
You will feel a lot better. You will begin to see new possibilities. In some instances, you will get an even better result than initially planned. In other situations, you may still throw out the cake or lose the deal. But, you will have learned lots of valuable lessons you will use next time. You will also feel okay with it because you did not quit, giving it your best effort. You will never say I should have; instead, you will say I did all I could do, and I am happy with my effort. Because starting over was not the answer.
