I Sell Because I Care

I have a secret. I love business and love that I have had a career in sales. That’s not the secret. You’re right. I say those things all the time. The secret is the money involved in those two things is not my favorite part. I do appreciate it, and it is a must to survive. But, the secret is my favorite part of both is the people! 

The people I work with, the clients I serve, and the people that are my family. These groups of people benefit from my sales and business career or have benefited from my job.

I care, so I sell! It seems strange even to say that, but it’s true. We all think of people in specific careers like the ones who care about others. You may think of a social worker, a nurse, a doctor, or a teacher, and those are indeed great careers made up of people who care. But, salespeople care too.

They care that you understand what’s out there and are available to help you thrive and that you don’t get stuck in a bad contract. They care that your outcome is better after you buy than it was before they closed the sale.

Here’s another secret, the first classes I took toward a career were in nursing. Yes, nursing! I wanted to help people, to be there when they needed someone, but quickly decided that while I love people and care deeply about them, I was not a caregiver. 

I felt bad and somewhat lost about it for a while. Being an only child, we didn’t have animals in our home. I had always been cared for, and I had no clue how to be a caregiver. I was only 18, and I didn’t have the confidence required to fill that role. Please understand, I had plenty of compassion and love for others. But, I’m forgetful and sometimes easily distracted (last night, for example, the minute my head hit the pillow, my first thought was, “did I put the milk away?”), so you can see why nursing would have lead to a difficult life for me. No one wants a stressed-out, overthinking nurse to care for them. It just wasn’t my calling; however, I can’t even tell you the level of respect I have for those who become nurses. 

Then I considered social work or something with the aging. My first job had been a receptionist in a nursing home. I loved the residents. They taught me so much. I wanted to contribute to making lives happier for others that had so much to share.

I was trying to figure it out by taking the business courses and psychology courses. That’s when sales found me.

I discovered I could take my love for finding hidden value, the joy of persuasion and steering others to something better, and my passion for people and sell them.

That’s why I sell, and if you care about helping people, you can too. You may not be a caretaker, and that’s ok. There are other ways to show you care.
