Sell in the Spring

Is it easier to sell in the spring?

My very best sales months have sometimes come in the spring, and I think I know why.

I am more optimistic in the Spring. There is a feeling of an opportunity to start over. Winter often gives us too much time to think. When we have too much time to consider combined with a bunch of can’t’s, you get stuck.

But, there is an obstacle to sales in Kentucky in the Spring. My first few months in sales were in March and April. Kentucky weather is always full of variety and none more than Spring.

The Farmer’s Almanac and my grandmother call it “little winters” in the middle of Spring. Nearly every tree that blooms brings its brush of cold weather back. For Example, dogwood Winter, the longest, lasts ten days, and it may not be necessarily cold but either ten days of rain or cold. Sometimes it’s both.

My first “little winter” in sales, I was ready to give up. It had rained for three days straight.

I looked out the rain-covered windshield still in the parking lot of my office. While looking at my progress for the week I said to myself, “if you don’t learn to manage this rain, you’re not going to have a job.” I thought I can’t go in places drenched, my hair a mess, walking in with an umbrella is awkward to hold, and people stare as you try to get it together as you come through the door. So then it hit me, “buy a raincoat” my next stop was to purchase a raincoat and one with pockets to hold my cards and keep them dry.

It worked! It kept me warmer and dry. I was able to push through the rain. After all, as Mamaw reminded me, it was Spring and a warm sunny day was just around the corner.

I learned to make sales comfortable and enjoyable. So, I encourage you to work through it until you figure out how to get past the awkwardness, making it comfortable and enjoyable.
