The blue dress story is just one of many interesting things that have happened to me over the years in sales.
One day I wore a bright blue 👗 dress with a wide white collar on cold calls. I had borrowed it from my mom.
My mom’s favorite color was blue. She always looked so pretty in blue with her natural blonde hair and blue eyes.
I was feeling pretty good. It was a warm spring day. The dress was made just the way I liked a dress for cold calling. It had pockets. One on each side. One side for my business cards, and the other for the ones I would be collecting for the day.
I walked into a business just a few doors down from my own office. The lady behind the desk looked up. I ran through my usual “Hi, how are you?” She didn’t hesitate or consider what I said. She pulls her glasses down, looking over them at me, and shouts out, “Well, is that dress blue or what?” I just said, “Yeah, it is that’s my favorite part about it.” I then went right back to my original statement, “Hi, I’m Reena. How are you?”
I was a little shocked, of course, and could have let it hurt my feelings. I could have ran out the door and declared I would never again wear something bright. It could have resulted in never doing another cold call.
But it didn’t. Instead, I stayed the course. I remembered it’s not all about me. I only play a small role in the big picture. Regardless of what the lady had to say or think about me, I still had an objective.
I believe it’s important to decide every morning the goal for the day. Then the goal for each call or email decides the next step that will get you closer to a sale. Work toward that next step.
Don’t let the things that pop up distract you from your real goal. Respond in the friendliest way possible and then jump right back to what you are there to do.
The blue dress was the same dress I thought was pretty in the morning as it was when it created more attention than I anticipated. I was also the same person offering the same great product.
Wear the dress you love, don’t apologize, and don’t give up on the goal.
