Do you have your word of the year?
Let’s be Goldilocks in the new year. I don’t recommend going about it like her and inviting ourselves into the homes of strangers, but instead, we could be more willing to look for opportunities.
Goldie found herself in a strange, and I imagine, what could have been a stressful place.
She was hungry and tired. The bear’s home was not Goldie’s goal destination. But Goldie didn’t find herself in this desperate situation and give up or, worse, take the first option that came along for food or rest.
We get the impression Goldie was not giving up without an effort, yet she also didn’t rush to quick comfort.
Goldie evaluated the situation and paid close attention to what was important to her.
No one was going to gain any benefit from a tired and hungry Goldie.
Goldie was going to be much better prepared to tackle the rest of her journey by recognizing what she had to work with and making the best of it.
So, this brings me to my word of the year. I intend to be more like Goldie this year.
I will look for what is “just right.”
In the past, I tend to go all out on something and put in too much effort toward a single focus.
I have attained some awesome goals with this approach (example).
There is a time and a place for this sort of goal and push. It’s effective, and I’m glad I have it in my arsenal.
But, that type of push for too long can lead to some other things being unattended.
In addition, once I put in that sort of effort, I get tired and go about with too little effort in the days that follow, getting myself and my life and, yes, even my sales even further out of whack.
So this year, I plan to focus on what is “just right.”
The right amount of rest, the right amount of food, the right amount of effort. The right amount of time with my family, my friends, and what feels just right to me.
There’s lots of glory and fun in amazing feats and high-dollar sales. I love all those things.
But, my goal this year is to recognize and live in the “just right.”
I plan to remind myself “just right” is not to be confused with perfect. Perfect is not the goal because it is more rigid and does not include the serendipity of spur-of-the-moment amazing.
“Just Right,” at least to me, says you may find yourself in less than ideal situations, but there’s a right way to handle them.
It says not too much and not too little. It’s not big and fancy, and it’s not small and out of luck.
It is just the right amount of planning, living, and striving. Here’s to a year of Goldilocks happily taking on what comes our way.
