Did you have a vision board for 2020? If so, I’ guessing there were some unexpected events in 2020 that made those visions a bit challenging.
I, for one, had never considered a global pandemic. But, If I had I would have never guessed it would last for months.
Last December, I did a vision board, came up with a list of goals and chose my word of the year.
I didn’t think much of my vision board until a couple of months into the pandemic.
I really would have thought there was no use in looking at my vision board and it was challenging to consider any goal with so much widespread uncertainty.
But, one morning, I decided to take a peek at what I had hoped to achieve in 2020.
Surprisingly, I was well on my way toward my vision. The vision board included homemade food, time with my family, outdoor activities and beauty. It had healthy habits and close relationships. It included some ideas around writing.
This year I made more homemade meals than any year in the past. I spent lots of hours outside. I loved every extra minute at home with my boys. I got a new porch swing. My board had included one. It also included the words “stay” and “home”. What?! Yes, the words “stay” and “home”. I had wanted to do some things at home so we would enjoy it so much we wanted to stay home.
It also included some things about writing. I started my blog this year.
My word of 2020 was ”fulfillment.” It has not been a perfect year by any means, but I have been living a year of fulfillment, and many aspects of my vision board have come to fruition.
So how was this possible in a year of such uncertainty? I believe it was because this year I focused on something different than in years past.
This year was the first year my vision board didn’t include things. In the past, most photos on the board and the list of goals were things, and the things each had a number attached to them—for example, a dollar figure or ideal weight.
This year I replaced the numbers with feelings. I had specific feelings I wanted to create for myself, my family, and others.
Maybe you are hesitant to even think about 2021 and what it may bring. I believe it is healthy to consider the future and how we can improve. I encourage you to continue to dream about what could be. But this time, focus on feelings instead of things and numbers. For example, if there is an event you want on your vision board, put a visual representation on your board. But, consider the feeling of going to the event and how it will feel. The feeling is the result you want to attain.
