I’ve been listening to and reading Do Hard Things by Steve Magness (here).
It’s been quite eye-opening. I am continually working on my mindset, but this book challenged me to continue working on it with a new perspective.
I’ve used my mindset work to do things that were not fun or to get through tough things to get to the good stuff.
But this book takes a look at some tough things. The book uses the military and sports teams as an example. Have you thought about it? Do you believe toughness comes from making it through and enduring torture, or do you think it comes from deciding you will make it through whatever you come across?
The book challenges me to think about choosing to do something that may seem really hard.
I don’t mean choosing things that are a nightmare but things that require dedication and time but have a reward in the end.
One thing that the book points out is the success of a particular set of athletes that enjoy the process, not just the outcome. Those that enjoyed the process continued to improve at a greater rate over time, and in the end, the wins or success were just a bonus.
I have always believed how you think about it can change the outcome of anything.
Now this book has challenged me to find something hard that I’d like to accomplish, and here is the main point I want to enjoy the process of getting there, even if it’s hard.
My friend and mentor, Wendy with Chair Whimsy (link), just wrote a book. That seems like it would be hard. But, she broke it down in a process that made it manageable for her, and she has created something special.
I haven’t decided what my hard will be, but I think I’m going to choose to do something hard and choose to make the (hard ) process of attaining the goal fun!
Stay tuned. I’ll share when I decide. But for now, if you are facing something hard or challenging, can you take a fresh look at it to adjust a little something to make it as pleasant as possible?
